Stadiums and Football

Happy Moments or the 'I was there' phrase.........

or.......why did we go to that match????? For heaven's sake.

It was December 26th 1998, Goodison Park, Liverpool.
Everton - Derby County, that was really boring. The first corner was somewhere deep in the second half.

Two days later, we were, again, in Liverpool, but this time across Stanley Park at Anfield Road. Where
Newcastle United, with just twenty minutes to play, took a 0-2 lead against Liverpool. Liverpool won that
match with 4-2.

April 16th 1999, that was a friday, Sunderland beat Barnsley at Oakwell, 1-3, and were promoted to the Premier League.

Gillingham - Manchester City. Play off Final of the old Division 2 (now League 1).
At ten minutes before the end of the match, it was 0-0.
Seven (7) minutes later, it was Gillingham 2 Man City 0.
In the 90th minute, Man City scored 2-1. Added time was played, and in the 95th minute,
Man City scored once again, 2-2.
In extra time there were no goals, and Man City beat Gillingham after the penalty shoot out.

December 23rd 2000: Liverpool played Arsenal at Anfield. Arsenal outplayed Liverpool.
The final score was Liverpool 4 Arsenal 0.

April 28th 2001: Wrexham 1 Millwall 1. Millwall champions of division 2 (League 1 now).

Saturday, January 25th 2003 : Sheffield United was trailing 1-3 against Ipswich Town in a FA Cup 3rd
round tie. The Blades won with 4-3.

Saltergate, Chesterfield on May 8th 2004: Chesterfield - Luton Town.......
Final day of Division 2 (now League 1).
Luton Town was somewhere in the top half of the table and Chesterfield was 22nd in the table. The numbers
21 - 24 will relegate to Divison 3.
In the 85th minute, because off scores else where, Chesterfield was relegated.
In the 88th minute, Chesterfield scored, the ground exploded. And because off, once again, scores elsewhere, Chesterfield would
stay up. There were another 6 minutes to play. But Chesterfield made it....
During the match, some one next to me, tried to light his cigarette. But he was that nervous, so I rolled him a tobacco, light it
for him and gave it to him, or he asked for it.....
I will never forget, some scenes during the match and after the match....

Two days earlier and two years later, on May 6h 2006. Oxford United had to win against Leyton Orient to stay
in the Football League. The final score was Oxford United 2 Leyton Orient 3. Some emotional scenes at the ground.
Of course.

Sunday, January 5th 2008 : Fulham 2 Bristol Rovers 2. FA Cup 3rd round tie. Bristol Rovers won the replay.

Wednesday, September 30th 2009 : Nottingham Forest 2 Scunthorpe United. First time I saw Forest winning a league match.

Monday, April 5th 2010 : Newcastle United 2 Sheffield United 1. Newcastle United promoted to the Premier League.

That was it for the football matches in England.
